Beer Me... over and over again

That being said, it was as if this post by JetSetting Fools spoke to me.  I love me some beer, and now I have a new list of places I must try.  One of the spots on this list is like an old comforting blanket to me, and that is U Medvidku.  It is where I had my first Budvar, and where they brew X-Beer 33, which is a story for another day (#debauchery).

Continuing on...

Check out their article, 16 Places to Drink Craft Beer in Prague - it'll make your mouth water for some sweet nectar that is beer.  Or maybe that just happens to me.

"People who love to eat are always the best people." - Julia Child

The 6th annual Foodparade is coming up - on Sept. 3 & 4, more than 20 of Prague's restaurants and chefs will offer their wares...so come hungry!

There is, of course, beer & wine.  We are Czechs after all.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at http://foodparade.cz/vstupenky/ OR http://www.ticketstream.cz/

Or even better yet, you can try to win tickets by answering the following question and emailing your answer to info@prague.tv by August 21st:

What's the value in CZK of the festivals currency "1 CHEF"?

Pssst...I'll give you a hint.  1 CHEF is 20 CZK.  Shhhh, don't tell anyone! And good luck.

Oh, and did I mention... this event is being held at Troja Chateau ...a stunning Baroque structure located in the city's suburbs.  Stunning views, vineyards, and the Prague Zoo is located right next door, thus you can make a day of your visit to Troja.

Ice, Ice Baby

I discovered a great place to go to cool off on a sweltering summer's day (not that it is a sweltering summer day).  Not even close, actually.

Let me try this again...

I discovered a great place to go on a crisp autumn day to enjoy an ice cold beer (literally) and prep one's self for the winter days still to come.

Much better.

Where is this winter wonderland where nude ice ladies serve you ice-cold Absolut shots?

Ice Pub Prague located in Karlovy lázně, Smetanovo nábřeží 198/1,
110 00 Praha 1, Old Town

Welcome to your very own igloo

Where the drinks are served ice-cold in a glass made of ice, naturally.

The DJ spins...on ice

And the art is, well...ice!

So just how cold is it?  -7 degree Celsius, which is 19.4 degrees Fahrenheit.  So yeah, it's damn cold.
But don't fear, they'll provide you with a thermal eskimo suit & gloves.

See, I don't even like the cold (allow me to clarify, I don't like anything below 75 degrees F), and I was smiling.
**Maybe I had a few of those shots by this time...**

Note:  Guests are only allowed to stay inside for 30-minutes.  Don't worry, you won't turn into this...

Yet another reason why...
I LOVE

Mmm Beer

Aside from Lokál, which I have not been to yet, I agree with their selections.  U Fleků and Klášterní Pivovar Strahov are two of my favorite places... old faithfuls if you will.   I'd say if you'll be visiting Prague, these 5 stops are a definite must.  Beer tour, anyone?

I've posted about Pivovar Strahov before and you can read it here, a well as Zlý Časy, which you will find here.

I think we can all agree that Homer Simpson says it best...

A beloved 4-letter word...

Pivo.

Pivo means beer.

Czech and pivo go hand-in-hand.

Czechpivo should almost just be one complete word.  In a dictionary even.

We Czechs love our pivo.

And I will prove it:

Take a look at this map showing our breweries Pividky.cz

Now do you believe me?

Drink.  Czech.  Beer.

That is all.

Here's a sure way to get your man to the spa

If I told my man that I'm taking him to the spa for some pampering he'd tell me that unless I'm the masseuse and "manicure" is code for beer, then I have a better chance of seeing pigs fly.

Well, 2 of 3 sure ain't bad!

A spa beer bath complete with UNLIMITED beer on tap, followed by 30 minutes in the spa's rejuvenation room where you relax on a heated bed ...

What guy wouldn't want to do this?

And while he's all giddy over being in a tub with you and drinking beer, we can think about all of the benefits of said beer bath. - who knew there were so many!  From boosting the immune system to being really good for our skin (perhaps I should start bathing in beer rather than drinking it)...read all about the benefits here

Bad Times Call for Great Beer

Too funny, I just stopped in this bar a few weeks ago when I was in Prague.  But we didn't stay.  In fact, we walked in, surveyed the scene (there was none) and left, even going as far as saying that Zlý Časy is definitely experiencing "bad times" (Zlý Časy translates to bad times, just an fyi).  Lights were bright, there was no music, and the few folks in there looked as though they have seen better days.  I have to give it the benefit of the doubt though, as it was a Friday night (late) and a holiday weekend (a 4-day long holiday weekend...Praguers had left the city), and it's not a touristy place, nor in a touristy location, which I actually love.
After reading this article, I wish we had stayed and given it a chance, perhaps even chatted up one of the intoxicated patrons hunched over his what is apparently very good beer...
  • Venturing off the tourist track in Prague, the author strikes gold with local beer bar Zlý Časy.
A dark, ominous hallway leads to a door. Silence. Not a sound. I open the door to find a series of steep wooden stairs spiraling downward. Is this a trap? My mind starts to wander.
As I make my way down, my heart beats a little faster and I start second-guessing the decision. Finally, I reach the bottom and am confronted by a bright red velvet curtain. Do I open it? Of course.
I pull open the curtain, feeling like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, and step into Zlý Časy (“Hard Times”).

bar entrance (the beginning of it, at least)
Welcome to Czech beer heaven. Within a 15-minute tram ride of the center of Prague, this small brick room is packed with local Czechs, wooden tables and a long bar that runs along the left side. I take a seat, clueless to any of the local beers on tap. There’s not the regular Pilsner Urquell or Staropramen that most pubs serve. This gem of a bar doesn't serve up the large conglomerate beers like many of the pubs in Prague – it specializes in small, local breweries.
After a few moments of mindless staring and feeling discombobulated by the list of beers written in Czech, a local guy named Stanislav chimes in to help. He recommends a locally brewed pilsner, one that's brewed by a father and son on some local farm outside of Prague.
The beer is fantastic. This is not your run of the mill, piss-tasting pilsner that dad and grandpa drink on the back porch – this is top-quality Czech pilsner.
But the people that fill this brick cellar bar are even better. Over the course of the next couple of hours, I chat with Stanislav about everything from beer, culture, politics, hockey, soccer, food and life in a pre/post–Communist era. We’re also joined by another man named Petro, a local window washer who works on the outskirts of Prague. He speaks not a lick of English, but is eager to take part, so Stan acts as our translator. The English/Czech language is no barrier whatsoever. When Stan is unable to translate, smiles and a thumbs up become our communication. (A smile and a thumbs up are universal, after all.)
We sit and chat for a couple more hours before it's time to say goodbye to Zlý Časy. It would be easy to stay longer. A couple of regulars have reserved our bar seats, though, so we're uprooted a bit early.
Just when I think my night's coming to an end, an invitation from Stanislav and Petro is presented: they ask me to join them at one of the local brew houses in the area. Stan says that it's just a few blocks away, and is one of their favorite places in all of Prague, so I decide to join them.
How can I refuse? It's the unexpected, the unplanned, and the world away from time schedules, maps and typical tourist destinations that make traveling so special. Although we're just a few miles from tourist sites like Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge, it's easy to feel much farther removed.
We make the short walk up Sezimova – a dark, quiet street lined with stone brick and beautiful old buildings. We turn right, and arrive at Pivovar Basta. The outside is dark, has a small door with a couple of windows, and appears to be nearly empty.
Upon entering, I'm greeted by the incredible smell of fermenting yeast, hops and brewing beer. It's a beautiful room. The floors are covered in light wood, dark stools and a number of large copper brew tanks. The place is packed.
Fortunately, we secure a seat, where we're later joined by Barbara – a friend of Stan's. She talks about attending nursing school and Czech culture, while Stan talks politics and Petro raves about his passion for AC Sparta, the soccer club based in Prague. We share stories (still being translated for Petro), some laughs and a bond that makes me feel like we've been friends much longer than a few hours. The warmth and hospitality these three show make the night truly special.
I can't help but wish there were more nights like this. Nights filled with great people, conversation and local treasures. As the evening comes to an end, it’s hugs, not handshakes. Gifts, not goodbyes.
Zlý Časy is a place I had read about – a place I sought out because of the reputation for their local brew. But as great as the beer was (some of the best in Prague), it's the three amazing Czech people I met who will remain the lasting memory.

Na Zdraví!

It's that time of year again!  The 5th annual...

For 17 days (May 17th - June 2nd), you'll have the chance to imbibe in more than 70 brands of Czech beers.  Beer, food, music...need I say more?

This year the festival returns to Vystavyště Holešovice (Prague Exhibition Grounds), which is a gorgeous building that was founded in the late 19th century and is used to this day for fairs, exhibitions, concerts and other activities.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Get your Guinness on in Prague

Where will you be celebrating with a pint in-hand?

There are several Irish pubs in Prague to get your Guinness on because apparently...

Caffrey's in Old Town Square

The Dubliner located in the Tyn courtyard (not far from Caffrey's)

The James Joyce Pub (formerly Molly Malone's) has the most authentic Irish country pub atmosphere and is just a 5-minute walk from Old Town Square.  U Obecniho dvora 4 Prague 1

Rock O' Reilly's located at Štěpánská 32 attracts lots of stag and hen parties, so be ready for a packed house

J.J. Murphy's Irish Bar   located at Trziste 4, Praha 1
is situated around the corner from Malostranské náměstí

The Irish Club  at Keramická 4 in Prague 7 has a cozy, homey feel thanks to its woodwork (direct from Ireland apparently).

Money Murphy's  at Krymská 39 in Prague 10 may not have the most authentic Irish feel, but if you're looking for a laid back atmosphere, this is the place for you.  Word of warning... Guinness is bottled.

Pub O'Brien's at Janovského 36 in Prague 10 is situated near Výstaviště, the exhibition grounds.  It's a cross between Irish and Pirate.  Yes, pirate.  Argh.
