Watch R. Wagner's "Das Rheingold" LIVE from the NY Metropolitan Opera!

On August 18th, I wrote about the Rudonfinum building, and how the roof of the Rudolfinum bears the statues of famous composers, including Richard Wagner.  A legend from World War II states that the Concert Hall was to be defaced by toppling Mendelssohn off the roof, but the Nazi lackey was so ignorant that he knocked off Wagner's instead!

Rudolfinum

Richard Wagner
(May 22, 1813 - February 13, 1883)

Well, now you can catch one of Wagner's operas at the cinema.  Yes, that's right, at the cinema!  The New York Metropolitan Opera's series that beams live productions into movie theaters around the world returns this weekend with a presentation of "Das Rheingold", the first in Richard Wagner's 4-part "Der Ring des Nibelungen" cycle.

Based on German and Scandinavian myths, the "Ring" cycle is an epic tale of a magical ring with the power to rule the world.  "Das Rheingold" is considered a prologue.

The opera's complex set has been described as the most challenging production the Met has ever produced!  This Saturday (October 9th) is your chance to watch it LIVE from Lincoln Center in the Big Apple, in full HD quality, at Kino Aero.

Sung in German with Czech and English subtitles, the performance brings together two celebrated masters of the trade, conductor James Levine and director Robert Lepage.  Clocking in at 3 hours, it's short for an opera, but long for the cinema, so make sure you take your time with that popcorn!

Reserve your ticket(s) at the cinema or online at http://www.tickets-online.cz/cgi-bin/tol/genprog.pl?Kino=111000

Animator Miler awarded at Chemnitz festival

ČTK |
30 SEPTEMBER 2010
Berlin, Sept 29 (CTK) - Czech animator and illustrator Zdenek Miler, 89, author of the popular Mole (Krtecek) cartoon figure, received an honorary award at the 15th Schlingel International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Chemnitz, Germany, Wednesday, festival spokeswoman Christin Franz has said.
Miler could not take part in the award-giving ceremony for health reasons. The award for outstanding contribution to European children's film was taken over by Zdenka Deitchova, producer of the Mole series.
The festival said it awarded Miler for having created the "cult figure" of the Mole that is famous all over the world.
Miler has been the second to be given the festival's award after director Vaclav Vorlicek in 2006, whose Three Nuts for Cinderella (1973) Czech-German fairy-tale feature film is still very popular in Germany.
In honour of Miler the Schlingel festival, held on September 27-October 3, will also present a retrospective of his work.
Miler made the first drawings of the Mole in 1954. The first film with this figure was released in cinemas two years later. It was awarded at the international film festival in Venice in the same year. Until 2002 Miller shot some 50 sequels.
"Walt Disney has used almost all animals in his cartoon stories except for one. I have chosen this," Miler said in the past.

He is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment, and one of the two patrons of Italy (with Catherine of Siena), and its customary for Anglican and Roman Catholic churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of October 4th.
