No plans this weekend? Then head on over to Český Krumlov for the Five-petalled Rose Celebration! Today through Sunday, the town of Český Krumlov will be adorned in Renaissance dress to remember the ancestry of the Five-petalled Rose.
Picture it: Český Krumlov, 1570...
The town is filled with drum sounds and the voice of vagrant singers. The common folk and the aristocrats are enjoying the tricks of jugglers and actors, and the smell of roast meat and other delicacies fills the air. Lord William of Rosenberg, just named the Highest Prague Burgrave, arrives. The town is also visited by other members of the Five-petalled Rose families from the entire Bohemian kingdom. Brave knights, ladies of noble birth, and the common folk will all greet the town during a magnificent procession that will be concluded by a festive ceremony held in the brewery gardens. Once the nobility have been seated, a Gothic tournament will commence, remembering the "division of the Roses", and the children will have fun during the medieval games.
In the evening, Night of Fire will begin with a nighttime fire parade, which will illuminate the dark little streets and corners, and mysterious magicians and alchemists will paint various fire shapes into the darkness.
The skill of weavers, wood-carvers, potters, pastry cooks, and other craftsman can be admired during the celebrations, which are concluded with a graceful final procession.
The Five-petalled Rose festival is a celebration preserved from ancient times and is held in honor of the Rosenbergs, who owned Krumlov for 300 years since 1302. The name, Five-petalled Rose, comes from the rose that is drawn on the coat-of-arms of noble families, and which, thus far, is part of the city emblem of Český Krumlov.
